Holiday Hazards For Birds

The holidays are approaching fast! If you have a pet bird, you’ll want to be very careful over the next few weeks. This can be a dangerous time of year for Polly! An Oshawa, ON vet lists some holiday hazards for birds below.

Christmas trees are a serious hazard to pet birds. Many have very sharp needles. Polly could easily injure herself if she flies into the tree! The ornaments are also hazardous. Tinsel, ornament hooks, lights, ribbons, and delicate ornaments can all seriously injure your cute pet. Plus, many trees have been treated with chemicals, such as fertilizers and fungicides, which are toxic to birds.

Some of the most popular seasonal plants are toxic to Polly. Mistletoe, poinsettia, holly, ivy, yew, and chrysanthemums are all unsafe. That doesn’t necessarily mean that fake plants are a better choice: these can be dangerous as well.

Those scented candles can make your house smell great, but they aren’t safe for your feathered friend. Potpourri burners, incense, air fresheners, perfume, aerosols, cigarette smoke, and cleaning agents are a few more things that give off fumes that are toxic to birds.

A crackling fire can be the perfect touch that gives your home that cozy holiday glow. However, be very careful! Not only is the smoke unsafe for Polly, but she could seriously injure herself if she gets too close to the flames.

Many people foods are toxic to Polly. Don’t give your feathered buddy anything that contains chocolate, caffeine, alcohol, garlic, onions, avocado, or xylitol. Pitted fruits are also unsafe, as is anything that has a lot of fat, sugar, or salt. When you’re cooking, the kitchen itself can also be dangerous. Many types of cookware give off fumes that are toxic to Polly. Pots of boiling water are also hazardous to your cute pet.

The holidays often bring a lot of noise and commotion. Polly could get stressed out by anything from that mechanical singing snowman to the new ‘look’ her home has. Spend some extra time with your winged friend.

Always keep your little buddy’s personality in mind. If Polly is easily frightened, move her into a quiet room before the big holiday party.

Happy holidays from all of us here at Clarington Animal Hospital, your Oshawa, ON vet clinic. Please reach out if ever we can be of assistance.
