Things to Consider When Choosing an Exotic Pet

August 1 2017
Are you looking for a new pet? Snakes, lizards, turtles, chinchillas, and other exotic pets can make wonderful animal companions. There are some great benefits to choosing exotic pets: they don’t need to be walked or trained, won’t make much noise, and are fascinating to watch. That said, there are some things to consider before adopting an exotic pet. An Oshawa, ON vet lists some of them below.

Habitat

Most exotic pets live in cages, tanks, or enclosures, which can be both a blessing and a curse. Exotic pet enclosures can be both unique and attractive, and you won’t need to worry about your animal companion chewing up your shoes or leaving a mess on the floor. However, some—though not all—exotic pets can take up a good chunk of space. Make sure you can provide a proper habitat when your pet is fully grown.

Environment

Another thing to consider is the type of environment your pet will require. Some animals have very specific needs as far as light, heat, and humidity. You may need to monitor your pet’s environment quite closely. Also, because the equipment needed to maintain conditions in your pet’s habitat will need power, your electric bill could increase.

Charisma

While exotic pets are absolutely fascinating to watch, they aren’t always very interactive. A snake may not mind curling around your arm while you watch TV, but won’t be very interested in belly rubs or playtime.

Diet

Every type of pet has their own unique dietary needs. While certain exotics can eat specialized commercial foods, many of them also require specific types of food, such as fresh produce. This can get expensive, and, depending on what kind of pet you get, also a bit unsettling. For instance, many snakes eat pinky mice, while a gecko will eat live bugs or worms. Make sure you have both the budget and the stomach for feeding your new pet.

Care

Finding someone to care for your animal friend could be challenging. You’ll need to arrange boarding or petsitting for your little (or not so little) buddy when you travel.

Veterinary Care

Veterinary care is another thing to consider. Not all animal clinics work with exotics, so it’s important to find a reputable veterinary clinic. Is your exotic pet due for veterinary care? Contact us, your local Oshawa, ON animal clinic, today!
