5 Things to Consider Before Adopting a Reptile

April 15 2018
Are you considering getting a reptile? Snakes and lizards can make great pets, but they aren’t right for everyone. Be sure to think long and hard before deciding to get a reptilian buddy! In this article, an Oshawa, ON vet lists some things to consider before adopting a reptile.

Environmental Needs

Most reptiles are suited to warmer climates, not Canada’s chilly winters. To keep your pet happy and healthy, you’ll need to provide a suitable environment. Every type of reptile is a little different, so you’ll want to do some research before adopting one, to make sure you know exactly what is required. Keep in mind that the equipment needed to maintain the right levels of heat, humidity, and light for your scaled pal will use electricity, so your power bills may increase. Backup power is another thing to think about. If you often lose power, you may need to get a small generator for your pet’s habitat.

Diet

Every reptile has their own specific nutritional requirements. However, in many cases, feeding reptiles is a bit more complicated than popping open a can or pouring kibble into a bowl. Many reptiles eat live bugs. This is definitely not something everyone is going to be willing to deal with! It also means regular trips to the pet store. Other types of reptiles, such as iguanas, need fresh produce, and can eat quite a bit.

Cuddle Factor

While many reptiles don’t seem to mind being held or handled by their owners, they generally are not as affectionate or personable as other pets. If you want an animal companion that’s excited to see you when you get home, a reptile may not be the best option.

Space

Some of our scaled pals can get quite large. Iguanas, for instance, can get up to 6 feet long, and will eventually need either a sizable enclosure or even their own room. Make sure you have enough space to give your pet the space he needs when he or she is fully grown.

Longevity

Did you know that many types of reptiles can live 20 years or longer? Before adopting one, make sure you can commit to caring for it through its entire life span. Please contact us, your Oshawa, ON pet hospital, with any questions or concerns about reptile health or care. We are here to help!
