Curious Ways Cats Show Affection

February 15 2019
Does your cat paw at your sleeve when she wants you to pet her? Does she hop into your lap when she wants to snuggle? These adorable requests for attention are hard to resist! However, not all of Fluffy’s shows of love are that charming. In this article, an Oshawa, ON vet lists some of the more unorthodox ways cats show affection.

Head Butts

Does your kitty sometimes give you head butts? Also known as ‘forehead bonks’ and ‘kitty boops,’ these affectionate nudges are a super cute way of showing love. Your furball may also rub against your legs. (Fluffy is also marking you as her own by leaving her scent on you, but that’s beside the point.)

Gifts

Does your furball bring you presents? Our feline friends may very well be the only animal that thinks dead rodents make an appropriate gift. Fluffy always looks super proud of herself when presenting you with these offerings. This makes a strong argument for keeping your adorable little hunter indoors!

Bites

Most of the time, when an animal bites someone, they aren’t feeling particularly friendly. Cats, of course, don’t follow the usual rules. If your feline pal is feeling frisky, she may very well give you a little nip. This can be a bit confusing to people who aren’t used to cats!

Licking

Just like mama cats groom their kittens, adult kitties sometimes try to groom their owners. If your pet does this, you may have noticed that Fluffy’s tongue is quite rough, like a tiny patch of sandpaper. Love hurts!

Trying To Trip You

Another way that kitties sometimes show their affection is by running out in front of you as you are walking. We’re pretty sure that many of our feline patients have caused their owners to suddenly adjust their stride to keep their balance and/or avoid falling.

Claw Massage

Settling in with a good book or movie and a purring cat can be very relaxing. At least, until Fluffy starts kneading you. This cute, but slightly painful, show of affection is actually associated with your furry buddy’s memories of nursing. Kittens knead their mommas to stimulate milk flow. Try putting a towel or blanket in your lap before Fluffy gets settled. Please feel free to contact us, your Oshawa, ON vet clinic, anytime. We’re dedicated to keeping your pet in the best health possible!
