Tips for Adopting a Cat

June 1 2019
Are you considering adopting a kitty? June is Adopt A Cat Month, so this is a great time to do it. We are always happy to see pets going to loving homes! Read on as a local Oshawa, ON vet offers some advice on getting a new cat.

Get Ready

You’ll want to make a trip to the pet store before bringing your new kitty home. Fluffy will need food, toys, treats, bedding, a litterbox and litter, a carrier, and some dishes. Your furry buddy will also appreciate some pet furniture, such as a cat tower. A scratching post is also a must.

Choosing Your Cat

Sometimes people only need to look at a cat once to feel that special bond pets form with their humans. Others will find it quite difficult to choose the right furball. Spend a little time with your feline pal before making a final decision. After all, adopting a pet is a long-term commitment!

Veterinary Care

One of the first things on your agenda should be going to the vet. Even if your kitty is already fixed, vaccinated, and current on her parasite control, she’ll need a thorough exam. If your cat hasn’t been microchipped yet, we strongly suggest getting this done as well. This is a great chance to get some specific advice on Fluffy’s diet and care needs.

Getting Settled

Your furball may need some time to adjust to her new home. Changes are quite stressful for cats! If you have other pets, put Fluffy in a quiet back room with her things, and keep your furry pals separated at first. First impressions hold a lot of weight with kitties, and can be hard to overcome. Therefore, you’ll want to make introductions slowly, over the course of several days.

Start The Purr

Cats definitely all have their own purrsonalities. Some are shy and timid, while others are calm, friendly, or even a bit bossy. You may find that discovering your new pet’s quirks and character is both fun and entertaining. Don’t force attention on your kitty: that’s a serious offense in Fluffy’s book! Call her to you, and then offer her toys and treats. With good care, lots of love, and some patience, you’ll have that little motor running in no time.
