Getting Ready for Your New Dog

September 1 2019
Are you planning to adopt a new dog soon? Congratulations! We are always thrilled to see dogs going to great forever homes. Adoption day is a big deal for both you and your canine pal, so you’ll want to make sure to start things out on the right paw. Read on as a local Oshawa, ON vet offers some helpful tips on getting everything ready for Fido.

Shopping

A trip to the pet store is definitely in order. Your furry buddy will need comfy bedding, dishes, treats, a leash and harness or collar, grooming supplies, waste baggies, and, of course, lots of toys. Dogs with thin fur will also need winter jackets. We also recommend getting a crate or carrier. As for food, if you know what your canine companion has been eating, get that for now. Consult your vet before making any changes. Of course, these supplies are not one-size-fits-all. If you haven’t picked Fido out yet, don’t go shopping until you know what size and age he is.

Petproofing

Dogs are always interested in finding out if things taste good. They also have a habit of investigating things by trying to eat them. This can get Fido into some serious trouble! Make your home safe for your four-legged buddy by putting anything you don’t want him chewing on out of paws’ reach. This includes plastic bag and ties; wires and cords; medicine; chemicals; and anything small or sharp, such as coins, screws, buttons, phones, rubber bands, jewelry, and beads. Ask your vet for more information.

The Yard

Another thing you’ll need to do is make sure that your home and yard are free of any toxic plants. You can find a full list online at the ASPCA website. You’ll need to make sure that your fence is sturdy and tall enough to prevent Fido from getting out. It’s also a good idea to get a self-latching gate that closes securely. Many beloved pets have escaped through gates that were left open! If you have a pool, keep it fenced off when not in use. Pool covers are especially dangerous: many dogs try to walk on them, not realizing that the cover isn’t a solid surface. Please reach out to us, your Oshawa, ON vet clinic, for all your dog’s veterinary care needs. We can’t wait to meet your new canine companion!
