5 Ways to Help Promote Good Animal Welfare

December 1 2019
Here at Clarington Animal Hospital, we’re dedicated to doing everything we can to help animals. That’s one reason that we’re happy to partner with Vets Without Borders. This wonderful group promotes animal well-being, as well as human wellness and economic growth, both here in Canada and globally. However, there are many other ways that you can help our furred, feathered, and scaled friends. Here, an Oshawa, ON vet lists some ways you can make a difference.

Prevent Unwanted Litters

One of the best things ways to promote good animal welfare is to make sure your own pets don’t contribute to pet overpopulation by having unwanted litters. If your furry pal hasn’t been fixed yet, we recommend getting this done ASAP. (Bonus: your pet will also be calmer and better behaved after.)

Report Negligence

Sadly, not all pets are as cherished as our furry patients. If you see or know of an animal that is in a bad situation, report it! Many places now allow people to make reports anonymously. This will help reduce the risk of backlash.

Support Animal Charities

Monetary donations are of course always needed and appreciated, but you can also donate food, supplies, or even your time. The SPCA may be the most well-known animal charity in Canada, but it isn’t the only one. Humane Canada is another great option, as it is a union of many different SPCAs and animal shelters. There are also many smaller rescues and shelters, who care for a wide variety of animals. You can also support Vets Without Borders by clicking here.

Choose Pet-Friendly Products

Mass manufacturing definitely has its benefits, but sometimes those products come at the expense of animal habitats. Do some research, and promote companies that are dedicated to preserving and restoring fragile ecosystems and the wildlife they support.

Help Local Habitats

With the surge of development in recent years, many animals are losing their natural habitats. This is one area where every little bit helps. If you have a lawn, consider letting some or all of it return to a wilder state. This will provide food and shelter to birds, bees, butterflies, and other creatures. Even small steps, like avoiding toxic pesticides, can help. Do you have questions or concerns about your pet’s health or care? Please contact us, your Oshawa, ON vet clinic, anytime.
