Autumn Hazards for Kitties

October 15 2020
Fall has officially begun. Autumn is beautiful here in Ontario. However, people owned by cats may want to take some extra precautions to keep their feline buddies safe and healthy over the next few weeks. This can be a dangerous time of year for Fluffy! Read on as a local Bowmanville, ON vet lists some fall dangers for kitties.

Wild Animals

As the weather cools, many wild animals are looking for places to hibernate through the winter. They may be grumpier than usual. Smaller critters, like mice, also sometimes try to get indoors at this time of year. Rodents and vermin can carry parasites and disease, so this is another concern. Use humane, non-toxic methods to evict any intruders, and make sure that Fluffy is current on her vaccinations and parasite control.

Foliage

Many late-blooming plants, such as chrysanthemums and autumn crocuses, are toxic to pets. Mushrooms are also unsafe. Keep Fluffy away from leaf piles: they can harbor mold and mildew. Plus, sometimes snakes or other animals like to hide beneath them. Yikes!

Chemicals

Gardeners often treat their properties at this time of year. Pesticides and fertilizers are definitely not safe for cats. Fluffy could get sick by walking through a treated patch, and then grooming herself. Antifreeze is also extremely poisonous to kitties. Unfortunately, many brands have a flavor that they love. Mop up spills immediately. It’s also a good idea to go with a pet-friendly brand.

Weather

Temperatures can plummet quickly in autumn. This is one reason we recommend keeping Fluffy indoors. If you do let your furry buddy go out, make sure she has an emergency shelter, such as a storage tote with a hole cut in one side.

Fires

Pumpkin candles may give your home a very special, cozy glow. Keep these well away from your pet’s cute little paws. You’ll also want to be careful with fireplaces and heaters. Kitties and flames can be an extremely dangerous combination!

Halloween

Halloween is, unfortunately, one of the most dangerous holidays to our feline friends. Black cats are especially at risk, because of old myths connecting them to witchcraft. Even if you do let Fluffy go out, it’s best to ground her around the autumn holiday. Better safe than sorry!  Please feel free to contact us, your local Bowmanville, ON pet clinic, for all your cat’s veterinary care needs. We’re here to help!
