Conversations With Kitties

July 15 2021
Is your feline buddy a talkative little furball? Or does Fluffy mostly speak up if you’re late with her third breakfast, or have the audacity to move her from her napping spot? Just like people, cats all have their own purrsonalities. Some are furry little chatterboxes, and others don’t have much to say at all. A Oshawa, ON vet discusses talking to Fluffy below.

The Meow In History

Did you know that cats don’t usually ‘talk’ to each other? They save most of their meows for us! Actually, our feline overlords might have started meowing specifically so they could boss us around. Kittens and mama cats communicate through purrs. Adult cats usually make their points with facial expressions and body language.

Breed Characteristics

Breed does play a role in how talkative your kitty is. Some breeds have their own specific styles of vocalizing. The Maine Coon, for instance, sounds quite chirpy. The Siamese, on the other paw, is more of a yowler. Then there are some breeds that tend to be more quiet, like the Ragdoll.

Kitty Comprehension

No one is quite sure how much language Fluffy understands. Kitties clearly know their names, and they probably get the gist of what ‘Get down from there’ means. This is an interesting contrast with Fido: dogs can learn over 100 words and commands. Why are we having trouble sorting out what cats comprehend? Unsurprisingly, it’s because our feline pals often flat-out refuse to cooperate with researchers.

An Open Ear

Fluffy may not understand everything you tell her, but she clearly enjoys it when you talk to her. In fact, talking to your furry buddy is a great way to make her feel safe and loved. You also don’t have to worry about her spilling your secrets!

Singing

We always advocate getting cats spayed or neutered. The main reason for this is to prevent unwanted litters. Pets are also calmer and better behaved after being fixed. However, there’s also another reason. Our feline buddies often sing to try and attract mates. Apparently kitties find this sound appealing, which is one more thing we’ll never understand about them. Anyone who’s heard an amorous kitty’s love songs can confirm how horrible a singer Fluffy is. Trust us: you’ll appreciate being spared her ‘caterwauling.’ Do you have questions or concerns about your cat’s health or care? Contact us, your Oshawa, ON veterinary clinic!
