Fall With Pocket Pets

October 1 2021
Do you have a tiny pet, like a mouse, gerbil, hamster, or Guinea pig? These little guys are super cute, and are always fun to watch. Our littler animal companions of course live in terrariums or cages, so they aren’t as exposed to the seasonal dangers that many dogs and cats face. However, they will still need some extra TLC as the season changes and the temperatures drop. Read on as a local Oshawa, ON vet offers some advice on caring for a pocket pet in fall.

Temperature

Your pint-sized pal’s fur will insulate them to a degree, but it won’t offer complete protection from cold weather. Make sure that your little buddy’s home is in a room that stays at comfortable temperatures. This is especially important for hamsters. If Hammie gets too cold, he may try to hibernate. Pet hamsters don’t really know how to hibernate properly, so this can be very dangerous for them. On the other hand, you don’t want your pet to be too near a heater or fireplace, either.

Food

Many animals instinctively store food for winter at this time of year. Some of our tinier patients are actually a bit sneaky about this. Hamsters, for instance, are notorious for stashing food away, and then pretending that they are starving. Don’t fall for these theatrics! Trust us: it’s no fun trying to put a pocket pet on a diet.

Decorations

Who says you can’t get your miniature furball involved in some seasonal fun? You can decorate your little buddy’s cage for the season. Look for cute autumn-themed dishes and hides. You can also put some decorations outside the cage, or perhaps arrange your cute pet’s grass or hay in a cute seasonal display. Just stick with things that you know are safe. Avoid anything small or sharp. Items decorated in glitter, stain, or dye are also unsuitable, as are things with ropes or cords.

Bedding

Small animals like to be warm and cozy when it’s chilly, and who can blame them? You may want to add a little extra bedding at this time of year. Many little animals also enjoy cozies, which are sort of a cross between a bed and a tent. Buy or make one with a fun seasonal pattern. Do you have questions about your pet’s health or care?
