National Cat Day With The Kids

August 1 2023
August 8th is National Cat Day here in Canada. Kitties are beloved pets all over the world. In fact, Man’s Second Best Friend has been charming us for at least 3500 years, and perhaps as much as 10,000. That’s definitely worth celebrating! This cute kitty holiday is a purrfect time for kids to help get that motor going. A local Oshawa, ON vet suggests a few family-friendly projects in this article.

Make A Catio

Do you have a patio, porch, sunroom, or spare room? Turn it into a kitty palace by adding pet-safe plants and lots of toys. You can plant cat grass or catnip seeds in small pots for Fluffy. (Tip: check the ASPCA site here for a list of safe and unsafe plants.) You can also have the kids make some homemade cat furniture. There are lots of great DIY options for things like beds and cat towers. Check online for ideas.

Box Castle

This one is bound to please your feline pal. Cats just can’t resist boxes! This is apparently because they love small spaces, though Fluffy’s affinity for ambushing people may also play a role. You can make this project as simple or complex as you like. Just make sure that the final product is safe and sturdy.

Toys

Playful cats are super cute to watch. Buy or make Fluffy some new playthings, and take time to indulge her in a fun play session. You’ll find lots of ideas and instructions for homemade toys online. You can also experiment a bit, and make your own. Just make sure that your furry pal’s plaything will be safe.

Art

Art is a wonderful way for kids to learn creativity and self-expression. Have the little ones draw pictures of your furry friend. Or, they may prefer to write poems, songs, or stories about him. Keep the final products: these make great scrapbook additions.

Photo Sessions

We love seeing photos of kids and cats. Set up a photo session for your little ones and their feline pal. Just take care not to frighten Fluffy, and don’t let the kids put clothes on her.

Entertainment

Choose a movie that features a kitty for the night’s entertainment. (Tip: Puss In Boots is sure to be a hit.) Do you have questions about caring for your feline pal? Contact us, your Oshawa, ON pet clinic, today!
