Corgi Care Tips

June 1 2022
International Corgi Day is June 4th! These adorable little dogs truly have some dedicated fans, the most famous of course being Elizabeth II of England. An Oshawa, ON vet offers some Corgi care tips below.

Do Your Research

Before adopting Fido, do some research, and learn what is unique about Corgis and their health and care needs. For instance, these guys are prone to developing a few specific health issues. These include canine hip dysplasia, degenerative myelopathy, von Willebrand’s disease, intervertebral disc disease, and epilepsy.

Keep Fido Occupied

Corgis may look like cuddly lap dogs, but they are actually very active and intelligent. Fido will need lots of exercise and playtime. That means lots of toys, training, and walks!

Know Corgi Physiology

Because of their long backs and short legs, Corgis are prone to back and spine injuries. You’ll want to set out pet ramps or stairs for Fido to get on and off beds and couches, if he’s allowed. Don’t let your canine pal run down stairs, or jump off furniture.

Handle With Care

Be very careful when picking Fido up! Put one hand behind his front legs, with the other supporting his rump. Don’t let go till those tiny paws are on the ground!

Keep Fido Fit

Because of the issues mentioned above, it’s extremely important to keep Fido at (or at least near) a healthy weight. Obesity can really wreak havoc on these guys’ health! A simple walk and a quick play session probably won’t do it. One thing you can do is incorporate games like Fetch, which keep your pup moving while you stay stable. Ask your vet for specific recommendations.

Train Properly

Don’t let Fido’s adorable face fool you. Corgis can be quite stubborn and opinionated. (Even worse, they often get away with things because they’re so cute.) Little Fido’s petucation should start the day you bring him home. Be firm, patient, and consistent.

Consult Your Vet

Your vet is one of your best resources when it comes to proper dog care. Keep up with Fido’s recommended appointments. Also, don’t be afraid to ask for advice. That’s why we’re here!

Take ALL The Pictures

We know, all dogs are cute. However, Corgis are almost impossibly adorable! Trust us: you can never have too many pictures of Fido! Do you have questions about Corgi care? Contact us, your Oshawa, ON animal clinic, today!
