6 Ways to Keep Your Cat Happy and Healthy

September 1 2016
Did you know that September is officially Happy, Healthy Cat Month? Of course, we hope that our feline patients are happy and healthy all the time. That said, this is a great time to discuss some key aspects of cat care, and offer some advice on keeping Fluffy content and purring. Below, a Bowmanville, ON vet discusses keeping your furball happy and healthy.

Good Food

Make sure that your kitty is eating a good, nourishing diet, and get the best brand of cat food you can. Be careful not to overfeed your cat, however: you may find yourself with a chubby furball. While Fluffy may look cute if she’s a bit pudgy, those extra pounds can cause some very serious health problems. Ask your vet for specific nutritional recommendations.

Clean Litterbox

Be sure to keep Fluffy’s private powder room clean. Kitties hate dirty litterboxes!

Playtime

Toys provide your kitty with both mental stimulation, and will help get your furball off the couch and moving. Give Fluffy plenty of cute playthings to bat under the couch, and take time to play with her. Cats also enjoy birdwatching, so offer your furry little voyeur a comfy window seat with a good view.

Kitty Comforts

We probably don’t have to tell you what Fluffy’s favorite pastime is: napping! Make sure your kitty has lots of comfy napping spots. Your feline pal will appreciate having a few pieces of pet furniture, like a cat tower. We also recommend getting a good scratching post.

Veterinary Care

We know, Fluffy may not be happy about coming to see us. (We don’t take it personally.) However, proper veterinary care is absolutely crucial to your kitty’s health! Regular exams allow your vet to identify potential medical issues early on, which can be extremely helpful. Keeping up with your cat’s vaccines and parasite control is also important. In between appointments, watch for potential signs of sickness, and contact your vet immediately if you notice anything amiss. The sooner an issue is caught and treated, the better! Ask your vet for more information.

Love

Kitties need love to be truly happy. Pay attention to Fluffy, and let her snuggle up to you when she wants. A cat’s love is a truly precious gift! Is your cat due for veterinary care? Contact us, your Bowmanville, ON animal clinic! We’re here to help!
