Caring for Your Aging Dog

September 15 2016
Is your canine buddy going grey around the muzzle? Fido may be approaching—or already in—his senior years. Fido’s golden years are a special and beautiful time. Not only are senior dogs absolutely adorable, they often develop a very sweet, calm demeanor that many people really enjoy. However, as your pet ages, his needs will change a little, so you may want to make some small adjustments to his care regimen. An Oshawa, ON vet discusses senior dog care below.

Diet

Ask your vet for specific nutritional advice, including tips on switching Fido over to a senior-formula pet food. Your canine pal may also benefit from certain supplements. Fish oil, for instance, can help lubricate stiff joints. We also recommend getting elevated dishes, which are much easier for dogs to eat from than bowls on the floor.

Beds

One of the best things you can do for your old buddy is to get him a good doggy bed, so he can sleep comfortably at night. Consider investing in a good orthopedic pet mattress.

Exercise

As one might expect, dogs tend to slow down as they grow older. Don’t let your furry friend become a couch potato! Regular activity is very important, even if it’s just a short daily walk. Follow your vet’s recommendations. If Fido has a hard time climbing stairs, or getting on and off the couch, get some pet ramps or stairs to help him out.

Grooming

Your dog’s grooming needs will depend on the type of fur he has, but most dogs will benefit from regular brushing. This will remove dead fur from Fido’s coat, and is also good for his circulation. Keeping your canine pal’s nails trimmed is also important.

Veterinary Care

Your pooch may need to see the vet more often as he ages. Ask your vet to recommend an appointment schedule. In between appointments, watch Fido closely for any signs of sickness, such as vomiting, diarrhea, limping, or lack of appetite. Contact your vet immediately if you notice anything amiss.

Tail Wags

All Fido really wants is to spend time with you. Savor this special time with your beloved pet, and pay lots of attention to him. Your faithful pet’s tail wags will still put a smile on your face!
