Adopting a Rescued Rabbit

February 1 2017
Did you know that February is Adopt A Rescued Rabbit Month? Bunnies can make absolutely wonderful pets! They’re not only super cute, they are also lots of fun, and can be very affectionate. Unfortunately, many bunnies are in desperate need of good homes. Read on as a Bowmanville, ON vet discusses adopting a rescued rabbit.

Bunny Adoptions

There are many different reasons bunnies can end up in shelters or rescues. Sometimes they are put up for adoption due to neglect or abandonment, or simply because of unfortunate circumstances. Many pet bunnies are also surrendered by their owners. Unfortunately, many people fall for one of those cute furry faces and adopt a bunny without really understanding Floppy’s needs or habits. After realizing that these cute little furballs are basically adorable chewing machines, many new bunny owners decide to rehome their pets. This is very sad, as it isn’t the rabbits’ fault: they’re just following their instincts.

Bunny Care Basics

Before adopting a bunny, take time to learn about your new pal. Floppy isn’t hard to care for, but she does have some specific needs. Your furry pal will require a clean, comfy cage, with a solid bottom, a hidey-hole, and suitable substrate. And, just like any other pet, rabbits need proper veterinary care. Toys are also very important. Last but not least, you’ll need to provide your furball with healthy, nourishing food, including plenty of fresh grass hay. Ask your vet for more information.

Chewing

Floppy has open-rooted teeth, which means that those choppers never stop growing. Your pet will have to chew quite a bit, as otherwise her teeth could get too long and cause painful dental issues. Provide your bunny with plenty of safe, suitable chew toys. And, since you’ll need to let your furball out to play every day, you’ll also need to do some bunnyprooofing. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Bunny Love

While Floppy does have some specific care needs, she does make a very cute, fun, and lovable pet. Many bunnies love to cuddle with their owners! These little balls of fur can also be very playful and charismatic. If you are considering adopting a rabbit, please consider giving a rescued one a second chance.
