Signs of Arthritis in Dogs

October 15 2017
As you may know, arthritis is a very common problem with our canine friends. Although it often affects senior dogs, any pooch can develop arthritis, whether as a result of injury or simply because of genetics. Large breeds are particularly at risk. While arthritis cannot be cured, there are now many options for treating it and managing pet’s pain. However, since the signs of arthritis are often subtle at first, they can be easy to overlook. As a result, you may not realize your furry pal has issues until they are quite pronounced. Read on as an Oshawa, ON vet discusses some early warning signs of arthritis in dogs.

Licking/Chewing

Licking and/or chewing is often symptomatic of arthritis. If Fido is constantly licking or chewing himself, particularly his paws, limbs, or the base of his spine, he may be developing arthritis.

Limping

Limping is one of the most common symptoms of arthritis in dogs. At first, your pup may only limp for a moment when he first gets up. However, as the condition progresses, the limp will become more pronounced.

Reduced Mobility

Does your four-legged friend seem to be having trouble standing up or lying down, or climbing stairs? Have you noticed your pooch taking a lot longer to get in and out of the car? If so, arthritis could be the cause.

Grumpiness

Just like people, dogs can get a bit cranky if they don’t feel well. If your four-legged friend seems uncharacteristically grumpy, he could have arthritis.

Reduced Interest in Play

Fido may not feel very much like playing if he is feeling stiff and sore. If your pet’s favorite toys are gathering dust because your canine buddy has lost interest in playing, arthritis could be to blame.

Unusual Posture

Arthritis can affect not only your furry buddy’s joints, but also his spine. This can cause your canine pal to sit or stand in a stiff, hunched position.

Tips

It’s important to note that these symptoms can be caused by several medical problems, not just arthritis. If your pup has any of these warning signs, contact your vet right away.
