Senior Cat Care Tips

February 1 2018
Is your cat aged six or older? As your kitty ages, she may still think of herself as a kitten, but she will slow down. Although Fluffy’s basic needs won’t change, you may want to adjust her care regimen a bit, to keep her happy, healthy, and purring. Read on for some great senior cat care tips from an Oshawa, ON vet.

Good Food

Proper nutrition will go a long way towards keeping your kitty happy, healthy, and purring in her golden years. Ask your vet for specific advice, including serving sizes, supplements, and tips on switching Fluffy to a senior-formula pet food.

Playtime

Your furry buddy won’t be quite as frisky as she once was, but she’ll still benefit from the activity and mental stimulation playtime provides. Offer Fluffy plenty of fun toys, and play with her daily.

Cozy Napping Spots

While cats don’t generally have too much trouble finding themselves spots to curl up in, your kitty will definitely appreciate comfy beds and napping places.

Facilities

A litterbox with high sides may be hard for Fluffy to get in and out of. We recommend getting one with low walls. If your home has multiple floors, keep litterboxes on every level. That way, your kitty won’t have to use the stairs as often.

Veterinary Care

Your vet may recommend that Fluffy come in more often as she grows older, so that her health can be closely monitored. This can be very beneficial, as the sooner an issue is caught and treated, the better. In between appointments, watch for signs of illness, and contact your vet immediately if you notice anything unusual.

Senior Moments

Just like people, cats sometimes suffer a decline in their mental capacities as they age. Fluffy may forget where the kitchen is, or get lost coming back from the litterbox, and may meow to show her distress. When these sorts of things happen, just try to comfort your feline friend as much as possible.

Kitty Comforts

Small things, like using night-lights and offering pet ramps, can help keep your pet purring and comfortable. It’s also important just to make sure that your feline pal feels safe and loved. Talk to Fluffy, pet her, and snuggle up with her. Please do not hesitate to contact us, your Oshawa, ON pet clinic, for all your senior cat’s veterinary care needs. We’re here to help!
