Taking Your Dog to Work

June 15 2018
Did you know that June 22nd is Take Your Dog To Work Day? Fido can be a great coworker, though he isn’t necessarily cut out for every industry. Here, a Bowmanville, ON vet discusses taking your pet to work.

Fido’s Application

Fido should know basic doggy commands, such as Sit, Stay, Come, Heel, and Lay Down. He should also be microchipped, wearing ID tags, and current on all his vaccines and parasite control products. Housebreaking is also important. Hopefully, it goes without saying that if your dog doesn’t quite have potty-training mastered, he should stay home.

Puppy Personality

Not all dogs are cut out for the workplace. It really just depends on your work environment and your pet’s personality. Needless to say, if you own a Great Dane and work in an antique shop, you’re probably better off leaving Fido at home. A friendly, polite pooch may be welcomed with ear scritches and treats from all quarters. Dogs that are anxious, super active, aggressive, or loud may not get the job.

The Interview

Don’t take your furry buddy in to work with you unless you are able to get permission from your boss. Check with your co-workers as well, to make sure they don’t object. If all lights are green, give Fido a good bath a few days before he starts work. Brush him thoroughly the night before his first day. This will reduce the amount of fur that gets stuck everywhere, and ensure that your pooch puts his best paw forward.

Dog On The Job

Before bringing Fido in to the office, take him for a vigorous walk, and then tire him out with a fun play session. That way your furry friend will be calmer, and more likely to spend the morning napping. We also recommend taking your pooch for a long walk at lunch.

Tail Wags

All that said, if your dog is a good fit for your workplace, this can be a wonderful way to spend some extra time with your pup. Before you head for home, reward your canine pal for his hard day’s work with a special treat. Take him to a doggie café, or go through a drive-through and get him a plain cheeseburger. Please reach out to us, your Bowmanville, ON animal hospital, for all of your dog’s veterinary care needs. We are here to help!
