It’s that time of year again! Seasonal decorations are popping up everywhere, and stores, radios, and commercials are playing festive carols. It’s always great to relax and spend time with friends and family members. Of course, we consider pets to be both friends and family. Many of our furry patients get gifts at this time of year. It’s pretty easy to shop for dogs and cats, but what about smaller furballs? Why not make your little buddy’s gifts? A local Oshawa, ON vet lists some great homemade pocket pet toys in this article.

Mazes

Many of our smaller patients really enjoy mazes and tunnels. You can easily make a little labyrinth for your pint-sized pal out of narrow cardboard boxes. You can also use PVC pipe. Or, if you want to go all-out, make one out of paper-mache. Use newspaper printed with non-toxic ink, and a simple flour/water mix for glue.

Paper Toys

Plain paper is safe for these little furballs to chew on. Fill a tissue box or shoebox with shredded copy paper, or crumpled-up paper balls. Incorporate some treats to make it even more fun. Another option is to just cut plain paper into shapes, like snowflakes.

Cardboard

There are all sorts of great playthings you can make out of cardboard. The tubes from toilet paper or paper towel rolls can come in really handy here. Fill them with fresh herbs or shredded copy paper, or cut them into rings and use the rings to make a little ball. You can also experiment with making other shapes, like pyramids or envelopes.

Hidey Holes

Want to make your adorable pet’s cage a bit more festive? Cover a shoebox or tissue box with seasonal wrapping paper, and give your pal a cute hidey-hole. Again, you’ll want to use paper that was printed with non-toxic ink.

Box Castle

Here’s another great way to reuse empty boxes: make your furry little friend their own box castle! You can keep it simple, and just connect a few boxes. Or, spoil your pet by incorporating things like towers and turrets. Just don’t be surprised if your tiny pal tries to eat their new home.
