Celebrating International Cat Day

August 1 2020

There’s a pretty ‘pawesome’ holiday coming up. August 8th is International Cat Day! Our feline friends definitely deserve to be celebrated. This is a great chance to show Fluffy some extra TLC. Here, an Oshawa, ON vet discusses our special bond with Fluffy, and offers some ways to celebrate.

Kitty Love

Our feline pals make our lives better in many ways. For one thing, they have a way of turning houses into homes. Plus, cats are very lovable and affectionate. They form very strong bond with their humans, and think of us sort of as parents. (They also consider us their maids, hairdressers, waiters, and furniture, but that’s another topic.) Kitty cuddles are also good for us. Snuggling a purring furball is very soothing. That can be really beneficial for anyone coping with PTSD, depression, illness, injury, grief, or anxiety. These little furballs also have a special way of keeping us laughing. You can’t not giggle at Fluffy’s silly antics!

Celebrating

How does one celebrate this special occasion? If we could ask our feline patients, the overwhelming majority of them would probably request toys and treats. Catnip is another good bet. Comfy beds are also pretty ‘pawpular’ among cats. Or, you can buy or make your furball some cat furniture, such as a kitty tower. Kitties love lounging around on towers, looking adorable and collecting ear scritches. Another way to get Fluffy’s motor going is to offer her some empty boxes and paper bags to explore.

Involving The Kids

Fluffy is a purrfect playmate and cuddle buddy for children, and her purrs can be a big source of comfort for them. Why not have your kids make something for her? Box castles are a great option! They can also make homemade pet beds, catnip mice, or kitty tents, or plant some catnip or cat grass. You’ll find lots more great ideas online.

Cats In Need

Unfortunately, there are many adorable kitties out there in desperate need of loving homes. Consider making a donation to an animal rescue. If you’re up for a bigger commitment, look into volunteering or even fostering. Of course, the best way to help homeless kitties is to adopt one. Getting a new pet is a huge commitment, so think carefully before proceeding.
