Getting Fido Ready for Winter

November 1 2020
Winter is just around the corner. Whether you can’t wait to hit the slopes and snowmobile trails, or just want to burrow into a blanket until spring, there’s no escaping the change of seasons. Don’t forget about Fido as you start getting ready for the snow and cold! An Oshawa, ON vet offers some advice on getting your pup ready for winter in this article.

Clothes

If your canine pal has thin fur, he’ll likely benefit from wearing sweaters on frigid days. Go through Fido’s wardrobe, and make sure that everything is clean, in good condition, and still fits. Toss out anything that’s stained, ripped, or really worn.

Pet-Safe De-Icers

Keep Fido in mind when you buy de-icing agents. Many of these products can cause paw burns! Choose pet-safe brands.

Grooming

Did you know that dead fur and dander actually make Fido’s fur coat less effective at insulating him from the cold? Be sure to brush your canine buddy regularly.

Nutrition

Some dogs need to eat a bit more than usual when it’s really cold out. It may help to add supplements, such as glucosamine or fish oil, to your four-legged friend’s food. This can be especially beneficial for dogs with bone/joint issues, as they often get very stiff and sore when it’s cold and damp out. Ask your vet for recommendations.

Paw Care

That dry winter air can make Fido’s paws crack and chafe. Use paw balm or wax to moisturize and protect those furry feet. You’ll also need to clip your pet’s claws. If Fido has toe fur tufts, we recommend snipping those as well. Otherwise, they can collect ice balls, which are just as uncomfortable as they sound. Pawdicures are also important.

Bedding

Fido may spend a pretty good chunk of winter curled up in his doggy bed, dreaming about bacon. Make sure your pup’s bed is clean and in good condition. You may want to get your furry friend an extra bed or two. It’s nice to have options! Some dogs will also appreciate thermal blankets.

Walks

Take advantage of those last warm days, and go for some walks with your canine companion. A cup of coffee, a crisp afternoon, and gorgeous foliage all make for perfect dog-walking weather! Please reach out to us, your Oshawa, ON vet clinic, for all of your pet’s veterinary care needs. We’re here to help!
