Taking Fido To the Park

August 1 2021
Does your dog like to explore new places? Does Fido get excited when you take him to the park? Parks can be lots of fun for our canine companions. However, there are some things to consider when taking your furry best friend to one. A local Oshawa, ON vet offers some advice on this below.

Precautions

Fido should be microchipped, wearing ID tags, and current on his vaccines and parasite control. These are just basic precautions, which we always recommend keeping up on anyway. However, many dog parks require them. We also recommend that your canine pal be fixed.

Personality

Dogs are all unique individuals, just as people are. Some pooches love going to run and play with their buddies. Others are more fearful, or even aggressive. If your furry buddy seems uneasy, or has a tendency to get riled up among other dogs, the park may not be the best place for him. You’ll also want to observe the dogs in the park before letting your pet go. If you see pups there that aren’t playing nice, take Fido somewhere else, or try again later.

Treats

Many of the nicer parks offer picnic benches and shady areas, so people can sit and relax while their pets play with their buddies. It may be tempting to bring food along for yourself, but be careful. If you bring something that will give off an enticing scent, like a burger, you may find yourself with an audience. You’ll also want to be discreet with treats. Fenced-in dog parks can be great for working with Fido off-leash, but you may cause a stir if his pals notice you’re handing out snacks.

Water

It doesn’t take long for dogs to get hot and thirsty when they are running and playing. Bring water along for Fido. Even if the park has faucets or fountains, it’s best to bring something along, just in case it’s out of order. You may want to get a doggy water bottle with an attached dispenser, or some collapsible plastic dishes. These are just handy to keep with you.

Waste

Always pick up after your pooch. Some dog parks offer disposable baggies, but again, this is just a good thing to keep with you. As your Oshawa, ON veterinary clinic, we are here to help. Please contact us for all of your pet’s veterinary care needs.
