The Royal Family’s Dogs

May 1 2023
Well, the paparazzi are going to be busy this weekend, as King Charle III’s coronation is happening. We’ll leave speculation about Harry and Megan and other royal gossip to the pundits: we’re here for the pups. The Royal family has had a long and affectionate friendship with our canine companions, and we don’t expect that to change anytime soon. An Oshawa, ON vet discusses some of the royals and their favorite dogs below.

Queen Elizabeth II

No surprises here: the Queen’s love for these adorable, smart pooches is no secret. The affection was definitely mutual! That royal love story goes all the way back to 1944, when the Queen, then a teenager, was given a pooch named Susan. The 30 or so corgis she owned throughout the course of her life were all Susan’s descendants. The Queen also had a Dorgi. This pooch came about as the result of one of the corgis mating a Dachshund.

William And Kate

The Cambridges recently brought a new pooch into their fold: a Cocker Spaniel named Orla, whose name means “golden princess. Orla was chosen to fill the pawprints of the couple’s beloved pup Lupo, who passed away. Orla was brought home in Lupo’s last days, with the couple hoping that the furry bundle of joy would comfort and cheer Lupo. The new addition is actually one of the offspring of Lupo’s sister, Luna who belongs to Kate’s brother James. James wrote a pretty adorable note to Luna’s puppies before sending them to their forever homes. “I am sad to see you go, and yes I might cry but it will be with happiness as each of your new homes are bursting with love,” the letter said. “You might be scared at first, that’s ok. Just be yourself and you will never understand how much happiness you will bring to your new families and all the people you meet.” Aww!

Charles And Camilla

The soon-to-be crowned monarch and his wife are fans of the Jack Russell Terrier. Charles once posed with his four-legged friend, Tigga, in a family Christmas card, which is interesting as William and Harry are standing in plant urns in the shot. More recently, the royal couple adopted two more of the pups from a shelter. Please contact us, your Oshawa, ON pet clinic, for your pup’s veterinary care needs. We always treat our patients like royalty!
