Indoor Cat Care Tips

July 1 2017
Does your cat live indoors? If so, that’s wonderful! Cats are both healthier and safer as indoor pets. Plus, if you keep Fluffy inside, you won’t have to worry about her digging up your garden or leaving paw prints on your windshield. That said, it is important to make sure your kitty stays happy, healthy, and entertained indoors. Read on as a local Oshawa, ON vet offers tips on caring for an indoor cat.

Kitty Comforts

It’s quite easy to make your home comfy and fun for your furry friend. Start by making sure your furball has lots of soft beds and napping spots to choose from. Pet beds are great, but you can also just put a soft folded blanket into a box or wicker basket. If Fluffy stays home by herself while you go to work, leave a light and a radio on for her, so she isn’t sitting alone in a dark house.

Playtime

Playing isn’t just fun for Fluffy: it’s actually very beneficial for her, both mentally and physically. Make sure your feline pal has lots of toys to smack around, and spend a few minutes a day playing with her. This will offer her physical activity and mental stimulation, and will also let her burn off any excess energy.

Cat Furniture

Cats really enjoy having some things they don’t have to share. Get your furry friend a few things of her own, such as a good cat tower or a pet tent or tipi. If your feline buddy likes high places, consider getting her some wall-mounted furniture to play on.

Plants

Setting out pet-safe plants will help keep your home looking and smelling fresh. It will also give your kitty a taste of the outdoors. Set out some safe plants for Fluffy to nibble on and hide behind. (Tip: pick up an extra litterbox, and use it as a base for a mat of cat grass. Instant purr!) You can find a full list of toxic and nontoxic plants online at the ASPCA website.

View

Even if Fluffy has only hunted catnip mice, she’ll still enjoy watching birds and squirrels. Give your kitty a comfy window seat, where she can relax, sunbathe, and spy on local wildlife. Please contact us, your Oshawa, ON animal clinic, with any questions or concerns about your cat’s health or care. We’re happy to help!
