The holiday season is officially here! This special time of year can be dangerous for pets, however, so you’ll want to take some precautions to keep your furry buddy safe. A Bowmanville, ON vet lists some holiday dangers for pets in this article.

Food

Dogs and cats enjoy special treats just as much as people do. However, some of our favorite foods are toxic to Fido and Fluffy. Never let your pet have anything that contains garlic, onions, scallions, or chives. Pay close attention here, because these things are often used to season foods that would otherwise be safe! Grapes, currants, and raisins are also dangerous, as are chocolate, nuts, alcohol, pitted fruits, mushrooms, meat on the bone, raw dough or yeast, and anything that contains xylitol.

Plants

Poinsettias, holly, ivy, mistletoe, and lilies are all toxic to pets. Pine needles—even fake ones—can also cause issues. Play it safe, and keep seasonal plants in spots your furry pal can’t get to.

Decorations

Our furry companions are both playful and curious by nature, which is one of the reasons they’re so fun and entertaining. However, that frisky streak can also be dangerous. Ribbons, tinsel, and electric lights all pose choking and strangling hazards. Ornaments and ornament hooks are also unsafe.

Weather

Cold weather can be tough on dogs and cats. Make sure your pet has a warm, comfy bed. If your dog has thin fur, limit his outdoor time on frigid days, and get him a warm doggy jacket. As for Fluffy, she’s always better off staying inside, no matter what time of year it is.

Heat Sources

Pets and flames are a very dangerous combination. Use grates before fireplaces, and keep candles and potpourri burners in high spots that pets can’t reach.

Stress

It’s important to remember that some pets get very stressed and anxious around strangers. On New Year’s Eve, fireworks can also be a concern. Many of our furry friends are very scared by the noise and commotion. If you’re having a party, you may want to put your dog or cat in a quiet, comfy room with bedding, toys, food, treats, and, in Fluffy’s case, a litterbox.
