April 2nd is Ferret Day! Ferrets are very curious, playful, and fun. These little balls of fur make adorable pets! Here, a Bowmanville, ON vet discusses basic ferret care.

Housing

We recommend getting a wire cage that is at least 3′ x 2′ x 2′. Choose one with a solid floor. If you put a litterbox in, use newspaper pellets or corncob for substrate. Don’t use clay or clumping kitty litter; wood shavings; or pine or cedar substrates. For bedding, you can add an old tee shirt or towel. Your cute little pet will also need hidey-holes and sleeping spots. Pet tents and tunnels are also very popular with these guys. Make sure the cage is in a room that stays between 65 and 75°F. You don’t want your furry friend to get sick!

Toys

Toys are a definite must. Stuffed animals, plastic rattles, and balls will all entertain your pet. Don’t be surprised if your ferret also amuses himself by stealing your things and stashing them away. These little guys are notoriously red-pawed!

Care

Ferrets need time out of their cages every day. Spend lots of time with your furry buddy! Be sure to do some petproofing first. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Food

Ferrets are carnivorous, so their diets should be meat-based. If you can’t find ferret food, you can offer a high-quality kitten food. Avoid giving your pet just one brand of food, though: otherwise, he or she may refuse anything else. It’s also important for you to learn what isn’t safe for ferrets. Fish, dairy products, fruits and veggies, and fatty or sugary foods are all on the no-no list. Ask your vet for more information.

Grooming

Ferrets are quite clean, and groom themselves regularly. However, your furry pal will shed a few times a year, and will need to be combed daily at these times. You can bathe your pet occasionally, using ferret shampoo, though this shouldn’t be done too often. Dental cleanings and toenail trims are also on the agenda, though you may want these things done by your vet.

Veterinary Care

Your ferret will need regular examinations, as well as vaccinations and parasite control. Ask your vet to recommend an appointment schedule.
