Tips for Feeding Fluffy

September 15 2019
Does your cat have her way of letting you know she wants dinner right meow? Some kitties cry to demand food, or she may rub against your legs or run out in front of you. However, there are some things to keep in mind when filling your feline buddy’s bowl. A local Oshawa, ON vet offers tips on feeding your furball in this article.

Warm It Up

This isn’t an absolute must, but some kitties enjoy having their food warmed up a bit, especially in winter. Boil some water, and pour it into your pet’s bowl. Then, let the unopened can or pouch of food sit in the water for a moment. Dump the water before you put the food in your cat’s bowl. Or, you can just add a few spoonfuls of hot water to Fluffy’s food.

Paw Gratin

Do you have a finicky cat? Try topping off her food with something yummy, like crumbled-up treats. This is a good way to dress up a flavor Fluffy doesn’t like.

Choose Good Dishes

Plastic bowls are cheap, but they don’t last very long. They quickly develop small cracks that can harbor dangerous bacteria. Opt for glass or stainless steel. You may also want to try using flat dishes or small plates, for your pet’s food. Many kitties don’t like the feeling of their super-sensitive whiskers touching the sides of deep bowls. This may be one reason Fluffy sometimes drops her food on the floor before eating it.

Keeping It Clean

Put a placemat under Fluffy’s food dishes. This makes for easy cleaning! You can also use a tray with a small lip, which will keep crumbs from scattering.

Competition

If you have more than one cat, you may find yourself in a bit of a purrdicament if your pets have different dietary needs. You may need to feed your kitties at the same time, but in separate areas. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Storage

Consider storing Fluffy’s kibble in a pitcher or a glass jar with metal lid. This will help keep it fresh.

Portion Control

Portion size is very important! Even giving your furry friend just a few calories too many can cause her to start packing on extra pounds. Follow your vet’s recommendations. Do you have questions about your kitty’s diet or care needs? Contact us, your local Oshawa, ON vet clinic, today!
