Brushing Your Dog’s Teeth

October 1 2019
If you’ve ever had a toothache, you know they aren’t much fun. Dental issues are just as painful for pets as they are for us! However, Fido can’t care for his own teeth, so it’s up to you to do it for him. Read on as an Oshawa, ON vet offers some tips on brushing your canine buddy’s choppers.

Products

Never use products made for people: they aren’t safe for our furry friends. You’ll need to get a toothbrush that is made specifically for dogs. Another option is to use a finger toothbrush, or simply wrap gauze around your finger. As for toothpaste, your best bet is to get a flavored doggy toothpaste. Fido will enjoy having his teeth brushed much more if his toothpaste tastes good!

Getting Started

At first, you’ll want to just get Fido used to having his teeth and gums touched. Work in lots of forehead rubs, ear scritches, and praise, and offer your pooch a special treat. This will help him form a good impression of the process. Do this when your furry pal is feeling relaxed and cuddly, and make it part of your doggy hangout time.

Brushing

Next, you’ll want to introduce the toothpaste. Give your pooch a little taste, and see if he likes it. Then, start brushing his teeth, using gentle movements. Fido may not let you clean the inside of his teeth. If he isn’t having it, don’t fight him. Just do the outside. Make sure to get his back teeth, as those build up lots of tartar. When you’re done, give your canine friend a special treat.

Schedule

If possible, you should brush Fido’s teeth daily. Even if you only do one section of his mouth at a time, it will still help.

Other Options

If your canine pal just doesn’t like having his teeth brushed, you can still keep his mouth healthy with other products and tactics. Dental flakes, oral rinses, and dental-formula treats and chews can all be beneficial. (Tip: try putting doggy toothpaste on a chew stick.) Ask your vet for specific recommendations.

Professional Care

Even with great home care, Fido will still need his choppers examined. He’ll also benefit from professional cleanings. Have his teeth examined regularly, and cleaned as needed. Please reach out to us, your Oshawa, ON vet clinic, for your dog’s dental care needs. We’re here to help!
