How to Pamper a Rabbit

May 1 2020

Have you been considering adopting a rabbit? These little furballs are very cute and fun pets! However, first-time bunny owners often find themselves facing a learning curve. A comfy cage, a proper diet, and regular veterinary care are all crucial, but great bunny care doesn’t stop there. In this article, a Bowmanville, ON vet lists some easy ways to pamper a bunny.

Free Time

No matter how great Floppy’s cage is, your furry little buddy will soon get restless and bored if she is cooped up in her cage all the time. Bunnies are very curious and playful, and need several hours of recess every day. However, before you let your adorable little pet out to play, you’ll need to do some bunnyproofing. Ask your vet for advice.

Chew Toys

Rabbits have open-rooted teeth, so they must chew constantly to keep those choppers from overgrowing. Floppy will need lots of chew toys. Fortunately, this doesn’t have to cost much. You can make many bunny playthings out of plain paper, wood, wicker, or cardboard. In fact, the cardboard tubes from toilet-paper rolls make great chew toys! Ask your vet for more information.

Dig Boxes

Bunnies love to dig through stuff. One cute way to keep Floppy entertained is to get her a dig box. This can be a storage tote, basket, or even a shoebox. Fill it with toys, crumpled-up pieces of paper, herbs, chew sticks, and other bunny goodies, and let your pet have at it.

Grooming

Bunnies are quite clean, but they still need a bit of help in this department. You’ll need to brush Floppy regularly, trim her claws, and clean her ears. In case you were wondering, baths are definitely not on the agenda. In fact, rabbits are so scared of water that they can go into shock when submerged, and can even die! If your pet gets something on her fur, ask your vet for advice.

Love

Last but not least, make sure Floppy feels loved. Talk to her, pet her, play with her, and offer her toys and treats. If you please your furry friend, you’ll be rewarded with binkies, which are basically bunny happy dances. (We probably don’t have to tell you how cute these are.)
