5 Reasons to Keep Your Cat Indoors

June 15 2020

Do you keep your cat indoors? If so, that’s great! Our feline pals may have a taste for adventure, but they really are better off staying inside. A Bowmanville, ON vet lists some solid reasons to ground Fluffy in this article.

Safety

First and foremost, your cat will be much safer inside. Kitties that go outdoors face some very serious dangers! Cars and traffic are one huge concern. Fluffy could also be attacked by stray dogs, feral cats, or predators. She could also get trapped in a shed or building, caught in a snowstorm, or be exposed to toxic chemicals. As if that weren’t enough, outdoor kitties are also more susceptible to viruses and parasites.

Hunting

Kitties may look innocent and cuddly, but they are actually tiny, adorable serial killers. These cute little furballs kill over 20 billion small animals each year! To add insult to injury, most house cats aren’t even killing for food: they just enjoy it. We know, Fluffy may look really proud of herself when she brings you ‘gifts.’ However, your tiny lion may be wreaking havoc on fragile wildlife populations. (It’s probably also safe to say that most of you could do without these ‘presents.’)

Loss

This one should go without saying, but your furry friend’s chances of being lost or stolen plummet drastically if you keep her inside. Unless someone leaves a door open, or Fluffy gets out through a loose screen or something, you won’t have to worry about your pet going missing.

Shedding

Did you know that cats who are allowed outside shed more than those who stay indoors? This is because outdoor kitties are more exposed to seasonal weather changes that trigger fur growth and shedding cycles. You’ll find less fur all over your furniture and belongings. Plus, your cute pet will be less susceptible to hairballs. That’s a definite plus!

Kitty Havoc

Last but not least, keeping your cat indoors can also prevent quite a bit of kitty mischief. Your furball won’t be able to make paw art on your car, dig up your flowerbeds, or walk through mud or paint. Of course, Fluffy will still knock things off tables and pounce on your toes, but that’s just purr for the course!
