National Dog Photography Day

July 15 2020

Here at Clarington Animal Hospital, we like to observe the pet holidays that help us celebrate and protect our animal companions. There’s a pretty fun one around the corner. Dog Photography Day is July 26th! We never tire of seeing pictures of our canine patients. However, Fido isn’t always the most cooperative model. Read on for some great tips on from a Oshawa, ON vet on taking photos of your furry bff.

Angle

Many people snap photos of their dogs from above. There’s nothing wrong with this. However, you may find that you can really get some adorable shots if you snap from Fido’s eye level.

Contrast

For the best photos, pick a spot where the background contrasts Fido’s fur. For example, you probably won’t get a very good picture of a black dog at night.

Props

If you really want to take things to the next level, include some cute props. Fido may look adorable in a bandana or bow tie. However, you will need to put your pup’s safety first. Don’t use anything that your four-legged friend may be tempted to chew on or play with, and don’t leave him unattended with his props. Also, don’t force your canine companion to wear clothes if he seems uncomfortable in them.

Settings

Try experimenting with different camera apps and settings. Some pet photo apps will make noises, which help keep Fido’s attention. Others remove red-eye or keep the focus on your furry pal, rather than the background. Play around with things like burst mode and the continuous zoom feature.

Editing

We recommend taking more photos than you think you need. You can always discard the ones you don’t want. However, once you start using apps to crop and edit the photos, you may find that some of the ones you initially didn’t care for are much better than you thought.

Timing

Choosing the right time for Fido’s photo shoot is also important. Generally, you’ll get the best light at dawn or dusk, when everything has a naturally golden glow.

Fun

Try to really capture your canine pal’s personality. If Fido is a four-legged ball of zoom, snap photos of him running and playing. If your pooch is more of a couch potato, get some shots of him snoozing in his bed.
