5 Reasons To Appreciate Ginger Cats

September 1 2022
Did you know that today is Ginger Cat Day? It’s also World Letter Writing Day, but ginger cats are more in our wheelhouse. If your feline buddy is a redhead, then you’ll definitely want to pay her some extra attention. An Oshawa, ON vet lists some reasons to love orange kitties in this article.

They’re Iconic

Cats of all shapes, sizes, colors, and ages have broken into movies and television. However, ginger furballs have been purrticularly successful in this area. First and foremost, we have Garfield, the lasagna-loving, sardonic kitty that has been amusing us since the 1970’s. There’s also Jonesy, the brave kitty from Alien; Milo, from Milo and Otis; Morris, the famous cat food spokeskitty; and, perhaps most recently, Skidmark from Fear The Walking Dead.

They’re Fun To Name

Many of us in the world of veterinary medicine have redheaded patients with fun names like Garfield, Cheddar, Frito, Cheeto, and Tigger. When we see these cute monikers on new patient appointments, we know that there’s a good chance we’re about to meet an adorable redheaded furball. (Of course, this isn’t always guaranteed. There are plenty of black cats named Snowball out there!)

They’re Charming

To be fair, we think that all of our feline friends are adorable. Fluffy can be quite charismatic for a little ball of fur! However, while every kitty has their own unique purrsonality, many ginger cats do often share a few common traits. Just like their idol, Garfield, they tend to be quite vocal, a bit sassy, extremely affectionate, and, well, a bit lazy.

They’re Beautiful

Did you know that all redheaded cats are tabbies? The opposite isn’t true, though: not all tabbies are redheads. Fluffy’s coat color can range from pale cream to a bright red, and she can have short, long, or even curly fur. She can also pick her pattern from five different options; classic, spotted, ticked, mackerel, and patched.

They Make Great Autumn Accessories

Fall is closing in fast, and soon much of the décor and landscaping we’ll be seeing everywhere will closely match Fluffy’s fur. Those dreary autumn rains can make for some great napping weather. Your feline pal will be more than happy to serve as a color-coordinated lap warmer on a lazy autumn afternoon. Do you have questions about your kitty’s health or care?
