Decorating Tips for Pet Owners

April 1 2020

Pets have a special way of filling our homes with love. Of course, they also fill our homes with toys and fur! You’ll want to keep your furry pal in mind when decorating. A Bowmanville, ON vet offers some tips on that below.

Plants

Plants will not only make your home look great, they’ll also filter the air. Just stick with pet-safe options. Boston ferns, Rubber trees, African violets, Money trees, and prayer plants are all good choices. You’ll find many more online at the ASPCA website here.

Window Treatments

We don’t really recommend blinds if you have a kitty. Our feline pals have a habit of making themselves little ‘doors’ in blinds, so they can look out the window. This can be quite dangerous, as your pet could get stuck. (Plus, it will ruin your blinds.) If you get something with cords, secure the cords so your furry buddy won’t get tangled up.

Floor Coverings

If possible, opt for floors rather than carpets. You can add the softness and warmth of a carpet with area rugs. Plus, you can change them out when they get old, or when you just want a new look.

Organization

Consider storing your pet’s food, toys, and treats in cookie jars or baskets. This is both functional and attractive! You could also get a storage bench or a standalone pantry or jelly cupboard for your furry friend’s things. That way, you’ll have everything in one place.

Litterbox

Litterboxes may be useful, but they’re not exactly pretty. You can upcycle an old end table or trunk into a litterbox holder. Just cut a door for Fluffy in one side, and use the doors or cover for access. You can also get a folding screen. Or, look for custom pieces. These may cost more, but they do look very nice.

Fabrics

Do you have a cat? Fluffy has certainly shredded a few sofas in her day. Do some research before buying furniture. Thick leather may hold up to those claws better than you would expect. You may also want to use slipcovers or plush throw blankets to protect your upholstery.

Bowls

Put a tray or placemat beneath your pet’s bowls. This will keep any messes off the floor and make cleaning easier.
